The Tony Award Nominations came out this morning and it’s all very exciting and interesting as to who got nominated and who didn’t. I’ll start with my favorites then cover the rest:
I am thrilled that one of my favorite shows of the season “Hair” got a total of 8 nominations. “Adaumbelle’s Quest” participant Gavin Creel got nominated for Leading Actor in a Musical (this is his 2nd Tony Nomination, the first being for his Broadway debut in “Thoroughly Modern Millie”), Will Swenson (who I want to get for this blog) also got nominated for Featured Actor in a Musical. The other nominations were for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Best Direction, and Best Choreography.
My second favorite show of the season“9 to 5” got 4 nominations: My girl Dolly Parton got nominated for Best Original Score which I’m beyond excited about because I feel she deserves the nomination and a bunch of those songs are classic Dolly writing! Allison Janey got nominated for Leading Actress in a Musical, Marc Kudish got nominated for Featured Actor in a Musical. It’s final nomination was Best Choreography. I am very disappointed that Stephanie J. Block did not get a nomination. She definitely deserves one for she sings the heck out “Get Out and Stay Out” and she nails her part perfectly.
I was happy that “Reasons To Be Pretty” got 3 nominations: Thomas Sadoski for Leading Actor in a Play, Marin Ireland for Featured Actress in a Play, and Best Play. I think it deserved all the nominations it got.
I’m also happy “[Title of Show]” got a nomination for Best Book of a Musical because it was a creative show.
“Shrek” got 8 nominations: Christopher Sieber got nominated for Featured Actor in a Musical which he definitely deserves. I mean, he does the whole freakin’ show on his knees…that alone counts. Sutton Foster got nominated for Leading Actress in a Musical while Brian d’Arcy James got nominated for Leading Actor in a Musical. The remaining nominations were for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, and Best Orchestrations.
“Liza at the Palace” got a nomination for Best Special Theatrical Event. It totally deserved this nomination and I think it deserves the win because she was amazing and she truly gives it her all at each and every show. She is a gem that we are lucky to have. I’m a little bias towards this show too because it featured two “Adaumbelle’s Quest” participants: Jim Caruso and Cortes Alexandar, who deserve the recognition as well for helping make the show what it was.
Even though I have not seen this show yet, I have listened to the cast recording and it’s amazing, so I feel “Next To Normal” deserved it’s 11 nominations: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, J. Robert Spencer got nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, Alice Ripley got nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, Jennifer Damiano got nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Sound Design, Best Direction, Best Orchestrations.
“Pal Joey” got 4 nominations: My girls got nominated, Stockard Channing for Lead Actress in a Musical and Martha Plimpton (who rocked it out!) for Featured Actress in a Musical. the other two nominations were for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Scenic Design.
“Billy Elliot” got 15 nominations, the most nominations out of any show. While I personally liked the movie better, I do hope and feel it deserves to win Best Choreography and I think the Billy’s deserve to win Lead Actor. These kids are so young and are freakin’ amazing with what they do on stage.
“Exit The King” got 4 nominations. The gift that is Geoffrey Rush got nominated for Lead Actor in a Play. After seeing him in this show, I understand why he is regarded so highly of an actor. He’s pure genious…He definitely deserves the recognition. The other nominations were for: Best Scenic Design, Costume Design, and Sound Design of a Play.
“Blithe Spirit” got 2 nominations. Angela Lansbury got nominated for Featured Actress in a Musical. While that is exciting, I do think Christine Ebersole or Jayne Atkinson deserved a nomination over Angela. Rupert should have gotten a nomination as well. While I love him in the movies, he was pretty damn amazing on stage. I was very impressed! The second nomination was for Best Costume Design.
The remaining shows I don’t have an opinion on. For complete coverage of the Tony Award Nominations visit: www.playbill.com, www.theatermania.com, www.Broadwayworld.com or www.Broadway.com
