Starring the incomparable Tovah Feldshuh as “Irena Gut Opdyke”, a Polish Catholic woman who risked her own life by hiding twelve Jewish refugees during World War II while serving as the housekeeper to one of the highest ranking Nazi Officers. From the moment Tovah walks out on stage, you are transported through her journey of self-discovery and realization that everyone’s life is of importance and deserves the chance to live freely. Holding their own alongside Tovah are Thomas Ryan who portrays “Major Rugemer”, the German officer who employs “Irena” as well Gene Silvers and Maja Wampuszyc as “Lazar and Ida Hallar”, Tracee Chimo as “Fanka Silberman” three of the twelve Jews Irena hid, Sandl Carroll who portrays “Helen”, the Catholic wife of a Jewish man who begs “Irena” to hide as well, Steven Hauck who portrays “Schultz”, “Irena’s” friend and confidant, and John Staniscl as “Sturmbannfuhrer Rokita”, the Nazi soldier who is trying to ruin “Irena”. As serious as this show is, there are welcomed moments of comic relief which Tovah delivers perfectly. What makes this show even more riveting is the fact that it’s based on the true life story of Irena Gut Opdyke.
