When a performer starts off his show acappella, you know you’re in for a treat, and that is exactly what the audience got tonight at Gavin Creel & Robbie Roth’s 9:30pm show at Ars Nova. In between songs Gavin tells stories of his life and inspiration behind the songs. He may not feel it, but Gavin is one of the more entertaining storytellers…from broken hearts to fulfilled dreams Gavin has lived it all. A combination of songs from his first album “GOODTIMENATION” & new ones from his forthcoming album, the evening was filled with emotions from love to sorrow & back to love again. Some new songs that I loved were “Fine,” & “The Upperhand” (which was one of the songs that helped this very blog come to life). As a special treat Gavin sang a song from “Godspell” & dueted with Sasha Allen his costar in “Hair.” The best part of the evening came when Gavin premiered his new song “Lonesome” and skyped his parents so they could see him perform it for the first time. He ended that segment by having his parents share the news that they will be joining Gavin at the Equality March this weekend in Washington, DC. Gavin ended his show the way he started acappella…a special way to end a special evening. So the next time Gavin has a show I suggest you go.
