I had the pleasure of seeing Robert Klein perform live tonight at Comix in New York City. Combining music & comedy, Robert commanded the stage & our attention. While most of his routine was politically fueled, he also interjected with some Jewish & Hollywood humor. He started off with a song about President Obama, begging him not to screw up his presidency by thinking with the wrong head (a la President Clinton). He continued with his political humor joshing on the likes of Sarah Palin, Eliot Spitzer & Larry Craig. He wondered what exactly intrigued Larry about the men’s room to make him want to have his affairs with men in there. Robert said there are a lot of places to have an affair, but he never considered the men’s room, even though there was plenty of toilet paper. He didn’t talk too much about Sarah Palin just that she was like the second coming of Dan Quayle. He also talked about filming a scene in his upcoming movie with Jennifer Lopez that comes out in January 2010. He plays Jennifer’s gynecologist & he said it was so weird filming because her husband, singer Marc Anthony, would stand behind the camera & watch as he examined her. One of the best moments came when Robert talked about his early days as a comedian; working with Johnny Carson and following Rodney Dangerfield around the comedy circuit. Robert’s impression of Rodney Dangerfield is magnificent, so much so that when I closed my eyes I thought Rodney was on stage. He ended the evening with 2 songs. The first one about colonoscopies and how it has opened up a whole new world for him but couldn’t imagine having this done in the earlier days with a full fledged camera crew up there. The second song was an ode to the Bronx. Since I talk a lot about theatre in my blog, I couldn’t help but enjoy when Robert referenced he days of working in theatre. The evening was full of enjoyment. Robert Klein shows no signs of slowing down. He performs again tomorrow night at Comix at 8pm. If you are able to catch him, I would recommend it!
