Tonight I had the unique experience of attending “Caty Bridgewater,” a work-in-progress presented by the STEP Theater Company (founded by LaQuet Sharnell from Broadway’s “The Lion King” & “Memphis”), with a book and lyrics by Trey Tatum and music and lyrics by Bobby Cronin (fellow “Adaumbelle’s Quest” participant). It’s a work in progress because the full show that this is to become is not fully written yet. Tonight only the first act and the showstopping second act number have been written. By the time this show comes to full fruition, so much could change, but what I saw so far is pretty great. As of now the show is about Caty, a girl who loves deeply from music to people. She has aspirations of joining the high school choir, but is forced/persuaded to join the high school band at which time the action starts to unfold from her sister stealing boyfriend to Caty falling for her band teacher. As the show unfolds, so does Caty, as she grows and learns more about love, especially how to love herself. The full second act still needs to be written, but tonight’s showcase helped the creative staff see if they were headed in the right direction. Every show goes through a process like this during it’s creation. I feel so fortunate to have been able to be part of tonight’s showcase and this part of the show’s journey. The portion of the show that was presented tonight has given me enough excitement to hold me over until the show is fully complete (though I do admit I hope it’s soon because I’m eager to find out how it all ends). So stay tuned because as soon as I get the word that a full staging is coming, I’ll be sure to let everyone know!
