I wanted to take a moment to go off-topic and spotlight a cause close to my heart, gay teenage suicide. There have been too many gay teenagers around the country who have taken their life as a result of harassment and bullying by their fellow peers. A few of the most recent lives lost are: Tyler Clementi (NJ), Eric Mohat (NY), Seth Walsh (CA), Asher Brown (TX), Justin Aaberg (MN), Billy Lucas (IN).

The Trevor Project is a wonderful national organization that helps provide resources and materials to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and their families with an emphasis on suicide prevention. If you need someone to talk to or don’t know where to turn, log on to http://www.thetrevorproject.org or call their 24 hour hotline at 866-4-U-TREVOR (866-488-7386) and speak with someone who can help.

Growing up I knew I was different, but at that time didn’t know that I was gay. The harassment and bullying were constant from my peers during my school days. From being called names to being tripped or pushed, there was hardly a day that went by where I wasn’t picked on. I HATED school and struggled to get through, but I made it through (with the help of my few friends and family). When I got to college, the harassment stopped and I finally understood what my difference meant and was able to come out. Again, I was fortunate to have the support of my friends, family and college faculty. I’m living my life as a proud gay man with a wonderful group of friends and close family and want to let those out there struggling know it gets better!

I know not everyone has the support system I had which is why the The Trevor Project is such a great organization. They have volunteers you can talk to, who will listen to you, and will be there for you. ¬†They can be your support if you don’t have anyone else or even if you do.

Now more than ever is the time support The Trevor Project. Whether it’s volunteering your own time, making a donation, or just spreading the word about the organization via your own website or any social networking site you are on. Let’s help our future generation grow up and be who they are!

Remember: It does get better! Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. It’s okay to be different. It’s okay to be who you are.
